Danforth University Center

Student Media Services (SMS) provides basic audio and video equipment for rental to students, staff, and faculty of Washington University in St. Louis for non-class activities. Equipment is rented at a minimal cost and available for pickup from a centralized location in the Danforth University Center & Event Management office located in DUC 322.

Office Hours:  Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Equipment must be picked up from DUC 322 during business hours and returned to either DUC 322 or the South Information Desk (DUC 1st floor lobby) by the following business day.

***Any equipment NOT returned at the agreed upon date will be subject to a LATE charge of $100 for each day that it is late, possible fines, and/or other disciplinary actions.***

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Are Student Union-recognized groups’ rentals free of charge?
A: Yes, Student Union groups are under contract with Student Media Services and do not have to pay rental fees, but they are still subject to late return fees and setup fees.

Q: Can someone answer technical questions or questions about equipment setups?

Q: Can equipment be taken off Washington University grounds?
A: Yes, with a few exceptions.

Q: Can Student Media Services edit student films?
A: No, Media Services does not have editing capabilities.

Q: When can I rent equipment?
A: Any time up to 48 hours before an event.

Q: When can I pick up equipment?
A: You can pick up equipment on either the day before or the day of your event.
Student Media Services is open from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Mon.-Fri.

Q: When do I have to return my equipment?
A: All rented equipment must be returned the next business day.

Q: Will someone be available after 5:00 p.m. or on weekends to help with setup or problems?
A: Student workers at the DUC info desks can offer limited help with events at the DUC.

Q: My event is not at the DUC; can I get help with the setup?
A: No, Student Media Services only offers tech assistance for events at the DUC.

Q: Can I cancel my equipment request?
A: Yes, you can cancel at any time. Please call or send an email noting that you want to cancel your request.

Q: I have rented a GL2 video camera and need a tripod, do you rent tripods?
A: We do not rent tripods; however, we have one available for use with the video camera.
